Freecycle groups are run by local volunteer moderators. The Toon group was set up on September 2nd, 2004 by Em, moderated with the help of Theo, PJ, Laura, Helen J. and Mason.
The Toon group recently split from its closest neighbours (Gateshead and North Tyneside) and now only covers Newcastle upon Tyne.

Dear North & South Tyne and Northumberland Members....
Since Monday 9th July, the Toon group no longer covers your areas -- you now have your very own groups (which you must subscribe to separately), leaving Toon to focus on Newcastle upon Tyne.
It is very important we support the smaller local groups so we can benefit our neighbours with our still-usable items without the need to travel far to collect.
For those of you not residing within the Newcastle boundaries, you will need to subscribe and post to your local group -- and we will encourage you to do so by rejecting any out of town posts to Toon that haven't used their local group at least 48 hours earlier!

Dear Toon Members....
As you will be aware by now, from 6pm on Monday 9th July, the Toon group will no longer cover Gateshead or North Tyneside -- these areas will have their very own groups (which you must subscribe to separately) leaving Toon to focus on Newcastle upon Tyne.

For those of you in these two areas, you do not need to leave the Toon
group, but you may find posts become excessive and repetitive. In
which case, you could either unsubscribe or change your email delivery
settings so you only receive Special Notices (that way, you'll still
be able to read all messages on the web).
Thanks to an overwhelming response and a huge initial membership
subscription level, we want to dive straight in and impress upon you
to follow these guidelines on all three groups:
~ Post to your nearest local group;
~ Do not cross- or multiple group-post within 48hours;
~ Be consistent with your location
[NOTE: Location refers to you as a member, *not* the item in
question or where you can travel to];
~ Be nice, polite and meet when arranged.

(ADMIN post 13/6/7) We're splitting the group!!
As 'Toon Freecycle' is fast approaching 7,000 members, we feel the time has come to split the group into three. Existing Toon mods: Helen J, will be starting 'North Tyneside Freecycle'; and Theo, 'Gateshead Freecycle', whilst both will continue to help moderate on Toon for the foreseeable future.
This change will gradually happen over the next few months and members will be encouraged to join and post to their local groups first. Once the two new groups reach about 300 members apiece, we will start to insist that members use their local group first.
To clarify, Tyne and Wear will soon have the following groups:
- Newcastle upon Tyne - to remain 'Toon' group
- Gateshead - split from Toon
- North Tyneside - split from Toon
- South Tyneside - pending application
- Sunderland - existing group
(Also 'Cramlington' will be a border group of North Tyneside and Northumberland, and 'Morpeth' with Northumberland.)
An ADMIN will be sent out to the group with information on how to subscribe to the new groups when available.
